My experience working as a Software Engineer at HSBC Technology India

After having completed 10 months at HTI (HSBC Technology India), I thought I might pen down my experience with HSBC so anyone wanting to join the organization might get an insight into what it’s like working for one of the largest financial and banking service institution in the world.

I joined HTI in August 2022. I got selected for the position of “Trainee Software Engineer” at HTI Pune through campus placements. The prefix “trainee” denotes you are under probation and they remove it after about 6–8 months of joining once your probation is over post which the title changes to just “Software Engineer”.

Work Culture —

So far my experience with HTI has been great in terms of work culture. I find that HSBC has quite employee centric policies and gives a positive and nurturing environment to its employees especially to someone starting their career with them.

Work-Life Balance —

WLB mostly depends on team you’re in irrespective to company but in my case it has also been great. I am never expected to login outside my working hours or on days on which I’m on leave (bare-minimum ik) As long as I let my manager or team leads know that I need a leave atleast a week ago, I’m able to get it approved. They actually ask you to take a few leaves in case you haven’t in a while and have been too engrossed in work over a long period of time.

Hike and Promotions —

I think it’s too soon for me to comment on this as I have only been here for less than a year but as far as I have observed and heard both hike and promotions are slow here.

Workload —

In my team, workload is not that much. I am able to put in time for personal growth and learning in my working hours which is great. Learning and personal development through courses etc. is even encouraged and nobody’s going to judge you for watching a Udemy course in your working hours as they don’t expect you to open your office laptop outside working hours.

Hybrid Model of Working —

Currently employees are expected to work from office at least 2 days a week mandatorily. Some teams do have fixed WFO days in a week like mondays and teusdays but in my team it’s quite flexible. All’s good as long as you show up at the office any two days of the week and manage to complete at least 6 hours in the office on that particular day.

Final Thoughts —

I have observed many of the people I work with at HSBC have been here for a long time and do not intent to leave and I can definitely see why. I’m glad that I started my career here because HTI set a benchmark for me and now I know what to expect from an employer.

If you liked what you just read, do remember to leave a like (or more). Also let me know your thoughts or if you have any questions, make sure to comment and I’ll try to answer them the best to my knowledge .

All the thoughts and opinions are my own and should not be accepted as facts but rather as my own personal experience.
